‘Brilliant’ eco-town proposals
backed
The government's minister of state for housing and planning has said plans for
an eco-town in Rackheath are close to meeting the government's environmental
criteria.
Speaking in an interview, Margaret Beckett gave her backing to the idea
of eco-towns, describing them as “brilliant” ideas.
She has said the
proposed eco-town - Rackheath, near Norwich - is close to meeting the government's
tight environmental criteria, but could not be pushed
on when exactly any decision might be made.
She said: “I think it's quite
fascinating and strange that the eco-towns idea is so controversial . . . I
can't help slightly wondering, to be honest,
whether people are just resisting the idea of new homes being built.”
In
December the Evening News revealed how details of the planned eco-town had
gone on public display in an attempt to reassure families that the development
would have a positive impact for the community.
At least 3,000 new homes are
planned for the Rackheath Eco-community in plans which have been submitted
to the government for scrutiny, after proposals for
a similar development at Coltishall were axed.
Among the details included in
the plans are proposed new cycle routes, bus services and a new train station
serving the population of the new and existing
developments.
Plans have also been unveiled for a World War II memorial to mark
the history of the site, a former airfield.
But concerns remained over the size
of the proposals.
